When did you realise there was a gap in the market for luxury bridal accessories?
Around 2 years ago, I had a request from a friend to make a headpiece for her wedding as she couldn’t find anything suitable for herself, her bridesmaids or her Mother. That is when I really looked into making my business dream a reality. I researched it more and more and it was quiet apparent that there was a real gap in the market especially in the north of England for bespoke headpieces.
What led you to the bridal industry?
I went to Leeds College of Art to learn the art of millinery. I enjoyed making hats, but I was always drawn to the sparkle, so I was naturally drawn to bridal accessories. Once I decided that was my main focus I just fell in love with the wedding industry. I love how positive my job is, I get to meet wonderful brides who are happy and excited about their big day. I love that they wear my pieces on the biggest day of their life and it is a real honour and privilege.
What has been your career highlight so far?
I think the highlight of my career so far is being short listed for The British Wedding Awards for the best accessory category. I am blown away by the support from the industry. I am amazed that my brand can stand at the side of some of the industry greats that have been doing this for years when my business is so new.
How long does it take you to design a collection?
To design a collection it takes about 6 months and then another 6 months to make the pieces. I concentrate much of my time on bespoke commissions so I'm always making pieces that are one of a kind. My collection is quite small at the moment but my aim is to just grow one season at a time.
You offer a bespoke service, but for a client what would this entail?
This works when the bride & I discuss the kind of piece they are looking for. What style, theme and look the wedding will be? Then I will roughly sketch or show elements of the bride's vision. Once this has been agreed I would go ahead and make the piece. Once the piece is made I like to do the fitting with the bride to make sure it is perfect. If this is not possible I will do a phone consultation to make sure she is happy with the result.
What are your favourite trends when it comes to bridal accessories?
My favourite trends at the moment are the beautiful vines that are great for twisting in long hair. These look so amazing and are so versatile you can do so much with them and achieve so many different looks.
I am also just seeing a new trend coming into the industry again which is the crown style so like a tiara but a more regal look. These are going to be huge in the coming seasons.
I also have a personal love of anything rose gold this is also a massive trend for 2017 and it will be in accessories, dresses, stationary basically anything wedding!!
What are your top tips for brides choosing wedding day accessories?
My advice for brides choosing accessories is do what you feel comfortable with. If you want a clean dainty look then go for it. If you want to have lots of sparkle, go for it. I also think accessories can be a great way to complement your overall bridal look. A bridal belt/sash can totally make a real impact to a more simple silhouette. A statement headpiece will always look fantastic on a bride that wears it with confidence.
What would you say is the biggest selling point for your brand?
The Bobby Pin gives you something that is not mass produced and all products are handmade so you are getting the very best quality.
I take pride in being different and that is what I wanted to do from the outset.
The Bobby Pin gives the best kind of customer service. It is very personal and I like to know all my brides on an individual level. I take a lot of time out to do my consultations but for me this is the best bit about my job, meeting new people every day and doing something that makes others happy.
